Offer of the Interdepartmental Course "Greek and Chinese Culture: A Comparative Approach"

This interdepartmental course, organized by the "Hellenic Center for Sinology" and the "UNESCO Chair on Threats to Cultural Heritage" of the Ionian University, is a unique educational experience, which gives students of all departments of the University of Athens the opportunity to explore, with the help of the most suitable teacher, two of the most important ancient civilizations in world history: the Greek and the Chinese. Through a comparative approach, we will delve into the similarities, the differences, and the cultural exchanges and interactions that have marked the course of humanity. The course carries regular ECTS.

The main objectives of the course are:

  • The understanding of the fundamental values ​​and traditions that characterize Greek and Chinese cultures, as well as the study of the way in which these cultures have influenced the development of world cultural heritage.
  • The development of critical thinking through the comparison of different forms of political, social and cultural organization. Students will have the opportunity to study issues such as religion, philosophy, art, and political structures of these two great civilizations.
  • The deepening of intercultural relations and exchanges between East and West, highlighting the reasons why these two civilizations have influenced each other over time, either through commercial exchanges or through intellectual and artistic influences.
