Participation of the UNESCO Chair at the IU at the 30th anniversary celebration of the UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Programme

UNESCO has convenend a 30th anniversary celebration of the UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Programme. This anniversary conference celebrated the accomplishments over the last three decades and advance authentic interdisciplinary dialogues and the cross-sectoral mobilization needed to confront complex challenges on the horizon. Dedicated to the theme of “Transforming knowledge for just and sustainable futures”, the two-day event was grounded in the spirit of scientific, moral, intellectual, and academic solidarity.

The conference was also an opportunity for networking to strengthen collaboration among members and with the UNESCO sector programmes. It included special sessions based around thematic clusters, allowing multiple opportunities for Chairs, Networks, UNESCO specialists, and other participants, to exchange and initiate new collaborations.

During the international conference of the UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs to mark 30 years of existence, at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, from 3 to 4 November 2022, the UNESCO  Chair on Threats to Cultural Heritage took part upon invitation  to the Chair holder Professor Stavros Katsios and contributed in one side event and two in-person meetings:

  1. the thematic session "Rethinking Interdisciplinary Cooperation for Culture in Emergencies" (3rd November 2022)
  2. an informal in-person meetinghosted by UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe for establishing a UNESCO Chairs regional network for the Mediterranean (3rd November 2022) and
  3. an informal in-person meeting hosted by the UNESCO Culture and Emergencies Directorate aiming at strengthening the cooperation and the operational capabilities for the protection of cultural heritage in emergencies (4th November 2022).

7th UNESCO UNITWIN Conference 2022: World Heritage and Tourism Innovation

SLOVENIA, PORTOROŽ – PORTOROSE, 15–20 MAY, 2022

Recently, both tourism and World Heritage sites have experienced dramatic changes in their environmental, technological, economic and social conditions. These new challenges call for new perspectives, new strategies and new solutions for more resilient and sustainable tourism in World Heritage sites.

The conference featured academic papers as well as a series of selected panel discussions, PhD workshops and online satellite events on topical issues related to the 3 main themes:

- World Heritage Sites in a Changing World

- Innovation in Tourism

- Sustainable Development Goals

One day conference on "Cultural Heritage, Refugees and Cultural Organizations: Actions and Risks"

GREECE, CORFU, IONIAN UNIVERSITY, 15 APRIL 2022

The UNESCO Chair on "Threats to Cultural Heritage and to Cultural Heritage Related Activities" of the Ionian University and the Laboratory of Cultural and Historical Heritage Documentation of the Department of Archives, Librarianship and Museology of the Ionian University have organized a one day conference on "Cultural heritage, refugees and cultural organizations: actions and dangers". Moderator was Ms. Daphne Kyriaki-Manesi, Professor, University of West Attica, Athens

The speakers:

- St. Katsios "The diverse threats against cultural heritage and the role of UNESCO in dealing with them"

- K. Chainoglou "The vulnerability of the intangible cultural heritage in times of war"

- M. Kanellopoulou-Boti "Refugees and cultural heritage: integration actions by cultural organizations"

- I. Nisyriou "The We Need Books library for refugees in Athens and its history"

Intervention by B. Chimarios "The role of libraries in the refugee issue"

The participants were awarded a Certificate of Attendance
